What do you know about organic and nonorganic produce?
How about dirty and clean?
In last week's Whimsy it was mentioned that your first choice for fruit would be fresh and local, another
consideration could be organic. Organic may not always be an option but it is definitely a good option if you have that choice.
Now you might be thinking why on earth would that be? I thought the same, until I started digging further into this topic. Also this is not just important for produce but most foods, but for now we will focus on produce, fruit and vegetables.
Let's look at what the label organic means in regards to produce. When you see this label, it refers to how it is grown, as well as how it is processed. Basic understanding of organic produce is that it is grown using natural fertilizers, weeds and pests are controlled naturally or with organic
herbicides or pesticides, and are GMO free.
If you are unable to buy organic all the time, preferrably local as well, there are two lists to be aware of. These lists include both fruit and vegetables, called the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen. These are guidelines you can use to consider for your produce purchases. Here are links to
learn what those are:
I am confident that you will find these lists quite interesting and helpful as you begin to understand and contemplate your choices between organic and nonorganic.

There is also important information to know about as you start your search for organic options, especially in regards to where you live. There are specific standards in different countries about how organics are regulated and labelled. For your interest and information on some countries' organic standards, here are

It truly is great to be informed, and have the tools and the knowledge to be able to make the best and healthiest informed choices for you and your family. My hope is you will be adding to your toolbox of health each week to help accomplish just that.
I look forward to hearing all that you have learned about organic and nonorganic foods that intrigue you?
