Celebrating summer produce isn’t just about delicious food to eat but you are also connecting with the season. With this comes the ability to support your farmers, and receive the health benefits of eating fresh, seasonal foods too.
There is joy from the summer bounty that is yours as you take in the pleasures this season brings you with its abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. You can visit and stroll through the farmer’s market, pick your own at local farms, harvest from your garden, or simply pick up produce at the grocery store. The variety and quality of summer produce are unmatched and amazing at this time!
I love this season!! Recently we had a few days to get away which took us to Keremeos. Yummy!!! We enjoyed the fresh first bite of sun-ripened tomatoes and the sweetness of a perfectly ripe peach just picked that morning. Summer produce is all about intense flavors and vibrant colors. These foods taste amazing at this time. Not only
that but they are jammed packed with nutrients that can help your body feel its best.
There are many benefits available to you as you enjoy summer’s produce! Here are ten of those:
1. Nutrient Rich Summer fruits and vegetables are nutrient powerhouses. They're packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that boost your immune system, improve skin health, and support overall well-being. For example, berries are high in antioxidants that protect against oxidative stress, while leafy greens provide essential vitamins like A, C, and
K.
2. Hydrating Many summer fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and tomatoes, have high water content, helping you stay hydrated during the hot months.
Proper hydration supports digestion, skin health, and energy levels, making summer produce an excellent natural source of fluids.
3. Low in Calories, High in
Fiber Summer produce like zucchini, cucumbers, and berries are low in calories but high in fiber, making them ideal for weight management.
Fiber helps you feel full longer, supports healthy digestion, and can lower cholesterol levels.
4. Heart Health Support Many summer fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, berries, and leafy greens, are rich in heart-healthy nutrients like potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants.
These nutrients help regulate blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and protect against cardiovascular disease.
5. Skin Health Enhancer The vitamins and antioxidants in summer produce, particularly vitamin C from berries, tomatoes, and peppers, help promote collagen production and protect the skin from sun damage.
Eating these foods regularly can lead to a more radiant complexion.
6. Energy Booster The natural sugars found in summer fruits, such as peaches and melons, provide a quick and sustained energy boost without the crash that can come from processed sugars.
As you partner them up with
fiber-rich vegetables or whole grains you can keep your energy levels stable throughout the day.
7. Digestion Supporter High-fiber produce like corn, green beans, and leafy greens promotes healthy digestion.
Fiber adds bulk to your diet. This aids you in having regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. Additionally, fermented summer foods like pickles or sauerkraut can introduce beneficial probiotics to your gut.
8. Environmentally Friendly Eating seasonally and locally reduces the carbon footprint associated with food transportation.
Summer produce is often more sustainable since it is grown and harvested closer to home. This
means fewer resources are used for transportation and storage.
9. Versatile and Easy to Prepare Summer produce is incredibly versatile.
They are easy to add to your meals. Whether you’re grilling, sautéing, blending, or enjoying them raw, fruits and vegetables require very little prep work to bring out their natural flavors.
10.
Mental Well-being Support Fresh, colorful foods are beautiful to see. They can have a positive impact on your mood.
The vibrant colors and fresh flavors of summer produce can uplift your spirits and contribute to a more positive mental state.
Plus, spending time in nature, such as gardening or visiting a farmer’s market, is a great way to reduce your stress and boost happiness.
