Mindfulness can feel like a luxury!
It may even feel like a luxury you can not afford, but it doesn’t have to feel this way. It does not require long moments of thoughtfulness or dramatic changes. You can intermingle small intentional practices throughout your day and into your routines. This creates a sense of calm and connection even on the busiest
days.
Here are five simple ways to find calm in your day:
1. Start with Your
Breath
Pause and focus on your breathing.
Try the 4-7-8 method: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds.
This simple technique can calm your mind and body in just a few moments.
2. Mindful Eating
Instead of rushing through your meals, take the time to savor each bite.
Notice the textures, flavors, and aromas.
This turns an ordinary meal into a moment of peace and
gratitude.
3. Gratitude in Action
While doing a routine task—like brushing your teeth or washing dishes—reflect on three things you’re grateful for.
These moments can ground you in
the present and shift your mindset to positivity.
4. Mindful Movement
Whether it’s a morning stretch or a short walk,
Bring awareness to how your body feels with each movement.
Tune into the rhythm of your steps and how your muscles stretch and relax.
5. Pause with Purpose
Set a reminder in your day periodically to stop for 1–2 minutes.
Notice your surroundings, feel your feet on the ground, and/or take a few deep breaths.
As you explore these practices,
remember that mindfulness is about being in the present moment. It is not about perfection. Small steps can make a big difference.
This week, I encourage you to try one of the mindfulness practices. How about enjoying a warm, nourishing bowl of oatmeal to start your day?
A Mindful Recipe to Savor
Start your day with a comforting bowl of oatmeal prepared with love:
Ingredients:
½ cup rolled oats
1 cup plant-based milk (like soy, almond, oat, or coconut milk) or water
1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional, for extra texture and
nutrients)
A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg
Toppings (Choose Your Favorites):
Fresh fruits: sliced banana, berries, or diced apple
A drizzle of maple
syrup or agave nectar
A handful of nuts or seeds: almonds, walnuts, pecans or pumpkin seeds
A sprinkle of shredded coconut or dark chocolate shavings
Instructions:
1. In a small pot:
Combine the oats, plant-based milk or water, chia seeds, and spices.
Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the oats are creamy and tender (about 5 minutes).
2. Pour into
a bowl and arrange your toppings mindfully, one at a time.
3. Sit down, breathe deeply, and savor each bite. Notice the warmth, textures, and flavors.
The simplest moments can bring you joy and connection when approached with intention.
